Katie Boyle Talks Comedy and Therapy
We loved talking to comedian Katie Boyle as our first guest on this season of the Real Talks podcast. Let's dive into the episode!
First and foremost, you can listen to the episode on Apple or Spotify or wherever you like to listen!
Katie Boyle is an Irish comedian living in New York, and has headlined clubs across the United States and Ireland. We recorded with Katie at Stella & Fly, a coffee and wine bar on New York City’s Upper East Side.
Katie’s comedy career has taken off. On tour, she performs for sold out shows. On social media, her videos have millions of views. Her hour-long comedy special, “I’ll Do It Myself,” has been viewed more than 330,000 times on Youtube.
Katie’s show touches on so many topics that made us laugh out loud. From stories about family, to dating, to life as an immigrant, Katie’s range from lighthearted to vulnerable was the perfect mix.
Katie’s most popular video is what first caught our attention. It’s been viewed nearly 10 million times.
And her videos about being an Irish immigrant are spot on.
Therapy
An overarching theme of the episode was therapy. Or according to Katie and Alan, Terapy.
Katie talked about her new standup show she’s performing on tour, aptly titled “Terapy.” You can find dates across the US here.
Alan and Katie also shared their own experiences of therapy - how they got there, the impact it’s had and other reflections on their respective journeys.
As Katie mentioned, she’s performing “Terapy” at Union Hall in Brooklyn, NY on Saturday, March 16th. A pre-St. Patrick’s Day show! An update from the episode: it’s now sold out!
Vivienne Sayers O'Callaghan is opening for Katie. Vivienne promotes Irish language and culture in NYC.
Obviously Mary Kate’s favorite video of Vivienne’s is an amazing explanation of the harp as the symbol of Ireland.
Katie also mentioned the Irish courses she’s taking through Irish with Mollie.
In addition to touring, Katie has also been producing and emceeing a consistently sold out Irish comedy show at the Dead Rabbit since February 2023, which flies in Irish comedians to perform.
We were lucky enough to go to one of the Dead Rabbit shows recently - and cannot recommend it enough. The variety of comedians was incredible, and it was such a fun show in a cozy environment. Alan highly recommends their Guinness!
Katie also hosts her own podcast, called The Shift.
Other things mentioned in the episode:
Rob Delaney in Catastrophe - we love this show
The Shift, Katie’s podcast, is available on Apple and Spotify
